Are you interested in exploring contemporary Jewish Culture? Do you like to share and discuss ideas? Do you want to meet new people and discover new things?

Jewish Culture Club is a free group for anyone who wants to explore contemporary forms of Jewish Culture – this could be books, TV, film, fashion, music, art, theatre and much more! The group is open for anyone aged 18 and over, whether you identify as Jewish or are just curious to discover new things.

This month we will be joined by artist Victor Esses, whose show ‘The Death and Life of All of Us’ is coming to The Lowry on 18th & 19th October. Mixing documentary footage, storytelling, and live-music, ‘The Death & Life of All of Us’ is a funny and poignant exploration of family secrets, shame, and embracing our imperfections. At 19, Victor found his long-lost great-aunt Marcelle in Rome. She’d moved from Judaism to Christianity, Lebanon to Italy, changed her name and kept a life-long secret. He started making a documentary about her life. 20 years later, he still hasn’t completed it…

Victor Esses will share some sections of the performance with the group and discuss the inspiration and ideas behind the piece. The group will be invited to develop some questions and discussion points to shape the post-show discussion at The Lowry.

Participants will also be invited to attend the show at The Lowry on Wednesday 18 October.

ABOUT VICTOR

Victor Esses is a Latinx queer theatre and performance artist with a Jewish-Lebanese background. His work centres around the exploration of nuanced, intersectional (auto)biographical narratives, focusing on themes of belonging, resilience, and intimacy. Through his performances, talks, and workshops, he strives to create a space for radical honesty and gentleness, fostering conversations that delve deeper and confront shame.
