Join us for a special evening bringing to life the musical world of Manchester’s Jewish theatrical community in the first half of the 20th century.

Rayzl has been given special access to the Manchester Jewish Museum collection to develop this brand-new musical programme, drawing on posters, programmes and memoirs to uncover the songs and shows that brought grassroots Jewish theatre to life.

For this performance, Rayzl explores the period from the founding of the culturally significant Jewish Working Men’s Club in 1887 through to the interwar years, a time when Manchester’s Jewish community was flourishing along Cheetham Hill Road.

The evening will feature Yiddish opera, popular songs of the day, musical theatre pieces and synagogue music, accompanied by illustration and narration to evoke the atmosphere of a celebratory gala performance.

At its heart is the story of a community coming of age: navigating assimilation while finding its own voice, and expressing a growing sense of confidence and pride in its Mancunian Jewish identity.

Following the recital, there will be a Q&A where you can hear more about the research and creative process behind this new performance, created especially for Manchester Jewish Museum. We’d also love you to bring your own memories. What songs do you remember your parents or grandparents singing? Which shows did they love? Come along, share your stories and help us continue to uncover the musical memories of Manchester’s Jewish community.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Rayzl is a multi-genre vocalist whose work explores music as a vehicle for storytelling, identity and memory. Her practice is particularly informed by an interest in the relationship between music and Judaism.

She recently graduated from The University of Manchester with Distinction in Ethnomusicology, where her research examined the vocalisation of Kaddish and its role in experiences of bereavement and grief. Her work considers how the voice simultaneously reflects and informs lived experience.

Rayzl has developed her vocal practice under the tutelage of Trevor Siemens, having previously studied under renowned soprano Laurie Ashworth. She regularly performs across Manchester and the wider North West region as a recitalist and jazz vocalist.
