Do you love to write? Or have an interest in exploring music? It doesn’t matter if you’ve never written songs before, we are an open group for anyone of any ability and background.
Our Song-writing Group meets monthly to work with our Creative Producer to create songs inspired by stories in our collection and your own experiences. We sometimes work with amazing composers, singers, writers and musicians to inspire new approaches to music creation.
During our sessions we will have a go at different writing activities and collaborate to create songs. You’ll get to hear lived experiences of Jewish communities through our collection, seeing objects, photographs and oral histories to inspire our writing. You’d be most welcome to bring an instrument to the session, but please note this isn’t necessary to partake. We have a piano, so you would be most welcome to play if you’d like to!
This month, we’re delighted to be joined by violinist and composer Anna Lowenstein. Together, we’ll explore the theme of “Home” through collaborative writing, listening and discussion. You’re invited to bring a song, melody or sounds that embody that idea for you. Anna will share traditional nigunim (Hasidic spiritual melodies) and guide the group in developing new ideas and lyrics inspired by them. We’ll also explore elements of klezmer and Ashkenazi folk melody, harmony and rhythm, learning more about how Anna develops her music and the influences that shape her sound.
Don’t worry if your new to the group, our doors are always open for new members – it’s a supportive space to try something new! No writing or music experience necessary.
