Join us this November for an Artist Network event hosted by Dex from Homos and Houmous and Ruth Nicholson at our beloved museum. The event is free to attend for all Artist Network members and it’s a great chance for you to meet, network and socialise with like minded individuals, who use Jewish themes in their creative practice.

Dex Chait Grodner, aka Chanukah Lewinsky, is a community organiser, arts producer, drag cabaret artist and theatre maker. Their work uses Jewish and pagan rituals to explore themes of money, biological and chosen family and the life cycle. Dex has performed at the JW3 and Tate Britain and given talks on trans inclusion in the arts at Southbank Centre, Scottish Sculpture Workshop and RADA. They are the founder of the queer, Jewish ecological art project Lady Cynthia’s Lover and are co-director for Queer Youth Art Collective.

Ruth Nicholson, aka Irving Sheffield is a pianist and violinist from Sheffield whose wide portfolio of work spans collaborative performance projects, community work, music for dancing, accompaniment, teaching and recording. They have collaborated with poet Genevieve Carver to write spoken-word-gig-theatre show A Beautiful Way to be Crazy, which they toured in 2019 and early 2020. Ruth has been working with Homos and Houmous since late 2020, composing, arranging and performing music in cabaret and theatre settings.

During the event we will be treated to a live sharing from them, a chat with one of MJM’s creative producing team, talking all things programming and what’s coming up here at MJM, as well as speed making activities, ‘How to be an artist’ chat and much more!

Our Café will be open for drinks and refreshments.

Our Artist Network events are great ways to meet new people and get your creative juices flowing. For regular opportunities, newsletters and specific artist network events make sure to sign up to our Artist Network here:

Homos and Houmous Bio

Since 2016 queer Jewish performance company Homos and Houmous has been schlepping around with a beigel platter of drag, comedy, politics, poetry and live klezmer music.
It’s hosts are music hall grand dame Chanukah Lewinsky (think Julie Walters on speed) and drag punk pin-up That Ray (Peaches meets disney villain).
AAAND we’re writing a play! INCONSOLABLE! is a hilarious tragedy holding a trans lense up to Jewish grief rituals. With music by Ruth Nicholson.

We are a part of a very nice factional kabal of Jewish leftist art makers and Yiddish revivalists. Check out the rad projects of Jewdas, Na’amod, Pink Peacock Cafe, Vashti Media and Yiddish Open Mic Cafe.

In 2022, Homos and Houmous has been in residence at London’s Royal Vauxhall Tavern, The Royal Court Theatre and Sadeh Farm.
