A workshop led by artist Ali Matthews in collaboration with Leo Burtin for the Foodie Group about cooking with and eating mushrooms.

In this workshop, Ali and Leo will invite the Foodie Group into their creative process in researching and developing Ali’s new show Mushroom Language. Over the past few months, Ali has been collaborating with artists from different disciplines (performance, music, design, socially engaged practice) and mycologists (foragers, herbalists, outdoor educators) to discover how fungi communicate with other species.

This workshop represents the culmination of Ali’s collaborative residency with Leo (a socially-engaged artist who works with food) at Manchester Jewish Museum. The workshop will involve discussion, preparation of food, and eating a Sephardi-inspired dish that uses mushrooms as a meat substitute. Over the afternoon, we’ll explore our associations with foraging, cultivating, preparing and eating these fungi friends.

What you need to know

This activity is designed for adults of all ages. Participants with an aversion to eating mushrooms are still welcome to come for the information!

Please let us know of allergies beforehand when booking your ticket, by emailing gemma@manchesterjewishmuseum.com
