Manchester Jewish Museum takes part in POLSKA! YEAR
From the 16th June to the 2nd September 2009 Manchester Jewish Museum is hosting a special exhibition Polish Heroes: Those Who Rescued Jews as part of POLSKA! YEAR. The exhibition is a contemporary photographic exhibition co-curated by the Auschwitz Jewish Center, the Galicia Jewish Museum, and the Polish/American/Jewish Alliance for Youth Action. It is a tribute to the more than 20,000 individuals honoured as Righteous Among the Nations by the Yad Vashem Holocaust Martyrs’ and Heroes’ Remembrance Authority in Israel, paying special attention to the over 6,000 Polish recipients. The exhibition focuses on twenty-one recipients who all live in the Kraków region today. Their faces and stories are given in honor of all those, living and dead, who could not be included in one exhibition. The exhibition features photographs by the late photographer Chris Schwarz.
POLSKA! YEAR commenced in spring 2009 and continues through 2010, and is a joint initiative of the Polish Ministry of Culture and National Heritage and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The purpose of the Year is to bring the communities of Poland and Great Britain closer by strengthening cultural relations and establishing new contacts between Polish and British artistic institutions, artists and organisers of cultural events.
