OVERTURES AND BEGINNERS PLEASE!
Just another reminder for the workshop at our new venue, Manchester Jewish Museum, Cheetham Hill Road, Manchester M8 on Sunday, 26th October.
The theme will be accessing and researching the National Archives and an information sheet has been prepared for all those attending the meeting. We are expecting a substantial number of people and it will be a worth-while meeting for beginners and also more advanced members. There will be experienced committee members on hand for one-to-one assistance - but we want to ensure that everyone has a fair opportunity for this.
One of our committee members has been working on digitising the cemetery information for the closed Prestwich Jewish Cemetery (Bury New Road, Prestwich Village) and the first batch of records will be available on the 26th. Approximately 350 headstones were photographed and the engravings on them are now being transcribed and transferred to a database together with the photos.
We have three new additions for our library:
The Jewish Victorian - genealogical information from the Jewish newspapers of 1861 to 1870, transcribed and edited by Doreen Berger (396 pages).
The Jewish Victorian - genealogical information from the Jewish newspapers of 1871 to 1880, transcribed and edited
by Doreen Berger (592 pages).
Modern map of "Jewish Odessa" (Ukraine).
I would appreciate an e-mail if you will be attending the meeting (if you have not already let me know). Bring a friend, another member of the family or anyone who you think might be interested in starting their family history research.
