23 March - Manchester Histories: Creative Threads Day

Spend a day exploring the hidden gems of Manchester and Salford's small heritage venues including:

  • Chetham's Library
  • Greater Manchester Transport Museum
  • Manchester Jewish Museum
  • the Pankhurst Centre and Elizabeth Gaskell House
  • Victoria Baths
  • Working Class Movement Library (WCML).

Travel easily between the venues on a free heritage bus that you can easily hop on and off at each of the venues.

Explore and view the buildings, their archives and exhibtions and be entertained by Klezmer musicians, LipService Theatre Company, street musicians, ballad singers and musical tours.

Venue entertainment

CHETHAM'S LIBRARY (10.00am - 4.00pm)

Folk musician Jennifer Reid will be talking about and performing songs from the Manchester ballads archives that is in Chetham's Libary. You'll even be able to get your own printed out copy of a ballad score.

GREATER MANCHESTER TRANSPORT MUSEUM (10.00am - 4.00pm)

Wander around the musuem and meet some strange characters including The Traffic Wardens who have never had so many vehicles to ticket, the travelling Hodman Dodmanott and Sally Forth, and The Lost Luggage Porters who are unsure which bus the bags go in.

MANCHESTER JEWISH MUSEUM(10.00am - 4.00pm)

Experience traditional Klezmer music and take part in a family friendly Klezmer workshop at the country's only Jewish Museum in an original synagogue.

THE PANKHURST CENTRE & ELIZABETH GASKELL HOUSE (10.00am - 4.00pm)

Award-winning theatre company LipService perform, Mrs Gaskell Meets Mrs Pankhurst, a humorous and imaginery meeting between two of Manchester's iconic women. Why is Mrs Gaskell in Mrs Pankhurst's home?

Performance Times: 11.00am, 12.30pm, 2.30pm (performances last ~40mins)

VICTORIA BATHS (12.00pm - 4.00pm)

Discover the colourful history of Victoria Baths with an entertaining musical tour, written and performed by singer songwriter Black Jack Barnet. Visitors will be delighted with tales of swimming in recycled water in the Females pool, budding romance in the Baths and the achievements of our Channel swimming heroine Sunny Lowry.

WORKING CLASS MOVEMENT LIBRARY (11.00am - 4.00pm)

Hear musical tales from the WCML's archive as the Bailey Sisters turn histories of working people into song.

Free bus running times

Route One: covers the following venues and runs from 10.30 until 4.30pm, leaving at the times listed:

  • Greater Manchester Transport Museum every half past the hour (last bus leaving at 3.30pm);
  • Manchester Jewish Museum every quarter to the hour;
  • Chetham's Library on the hour;
  • WCML every ten past the hour.

Route Two: covers the following venues and runs from 12.00pm until 4.00pm leaving at the times listed:

  • •Chetham's Library on the hour (last bus leaving at 3.00pm);

  • Pankhurst Centre twenty past the hour;

  • Victoria Baths twenty five to the hour.

There is no need to buy tickets for the buses simply hop on and off between venues.

Please plan your day that you area able to get back to your starting point if required. We will not be able to run you back to the start outside of the scheduled bus times.
