28th August: MUSIC WORKSHOP - Le Cheval et L'Ane (The Horse and the Donkey)

UNFORTUNATELY THIS WORKSHOP HAS NOW BEEN CANCELLED - next family workshop will be held on 1 Sept. MUSIC WORKSHOP: Le Cheval et L’ane (The Horse and the Donkey)

The artist Marc Chagall is acknowledged as one of the leading Jewish artists of the 20th Century. His work often drew on references to Eastern European culture, creating a modern style often using bright colours and eye-catching shapes full of energy and movement, whilst referencing elements of traditional Jewish life. Musicians have often featured in Chagall’s work: his painting The Fiddler inspired the title of the film ‘Fiddler on the Roof’ and many other pictures feature wandering musicians or references to music. Chagall spent important periods of his creative life in Paris – the home of many leading and ground breaking artists of the time.

Inspired by Manchester Jewish Museum’s Exhibition, Klezmer musicians Ros Hawley and Lindsay Aitkenhead will lead a creative music workshop for families exploring themes from the paintings on display. Starting with The Shtetl, the musicians will give an introduction to klezmer music, the traditional wedding music of the Eastern European Jewish community, telling us why klezmer music was so important for communities when a wedding took place, and through music, song and dance bring to life the story of the traditional Jewish Wedding. There will be chance to learn some of the rhythms and dance some of the steps of traditional klezmer music and dance.

The musicians will then take you on a musical journey through the exhibition, using a section of artworks along the way to perform and create music that tells the stories portrayed in the pictures. Animals, characters and street scenes will be brought to life through storytelling soundscapes created with the musicians. A family friendly workshop featuring live music, creative activities storytelling; come along and learn about klezmer, Chagall and his contemporaries and have some fun!
