7th April - BOOK LAUNCH: Bill William's "Jews and other foreigners"

On the 7th April we are delighted to be hosting a book launch for Bill William's new book "Jews and other foreigners".

Bill will be reading extracts from the book and signing copies.

The book draws on a wide range of documentary and oral sources, including interviews with refugees. It explores the response of the Manchester community to those threatened by the rise of Fascism in Europe. It takes a close look at the responses of particular sections of Manchester society, from Jewish communal organisations and the Zionist movement to the Christian churches, pacifist organisations and private charities. It offers a critical analysis of factors which helped and hindered the rescue work. What were the effects on the lives of the seven or eight thousand refugees – Spanish, Italian, German, Austrian and Czech – who arrived in Manchester between 1933 and 1940?

The event takes place from 2pm to 4pm and standard entrance charges apply.
