Manchester’s Textile Industry: The Archaeology

MCR Hidden HistoryTalk by Dr Michael Nevell, Head of Archaeology at University of Salford, looking at the archaeological remains of Manchester’s c.150 textile mills, from the first water-powered mills of the 1780s to the electric spinning mills of the Edwardian period.

Dr Nevell will bring together excavated examples, such as Arkwright’s Mill on Shudehill (Manchester’s first cotton spinning mill), with a study of surviving mill complexes such as Murrays’ Mills and Brownfield Mill to tell the story of the rise and fall of cottonopolis.
