100 Years of Bollywood (Doors open 6:30pm)

8th November 2015 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

Bollywood Brass BandDOORS OPEN 6:30 PM

Funky drummers and a 6 piece horn section are coming to MJM to celebrate a century of Bollywood. The Bollywood Brass Band will be playing live music in sync with video projections from the earliest Bollywood (1913) footage to present-day blockbusters – all inside Manchester’s oldest synagogue.

The show features music with synchronised video projections of dance sequences from movies such as Devdas, Dhoom and includes film by Phalke, India’s first home-grown film maker, accompanied by new music composed by the band.

Go from Heaven to Hell in Indian cinema’s first fully realised dream sequence (Awaara 1951). Enjoy the funky 1970s with the dangers of decadent Western hippies in RD Burman’s Dum Maro Dum (Hare Rama Hare Krishna 1971), and marvel at superstar Shah Rukh Khan dancing on top of a train in Oscar winner AR Rahman’s Chaiyya Chaiyya (Dil Se 1998). And many more…

Watch Bollywood Brass Band perform live at the Albany, London

“A Jack in the Box like bundle of cavorting musicians intent on blasting the genre into the 21st century” The Independent

“The band plunders the Bollywood canon and throws Brazilian samba, Punjabi drumming and British cheek into the Bhangra mix…With the BBB formation blowing, jostling for space and delivering the occasional sizzling solo, this was a sensory assault that oozed good humour and sent people noisily into the night” London Evening Standard
